CAIRO: Cairo has evacuated 18 Egyptian students and some of their parents from Wad Madani in Sudan’s Al-Jazirah state.
The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the evacuation was part of its mission to preserve the security and safety of Egyptians abroad.
Armed clashes recently took place in Wad Madani, the ministry added, warning Egyptians to leave Sudan immediately.
Coordination took place with the Sudanese authorities to ensure the evacuation of the 18 students from the city. They were transported to the Egyptian Consulate headquarters in Port Sudan, and then onward to Egypt.
The ministry called on Egyptian citizens to avoid traveling to Sudan under any circumstances.
Fighting broke out in the city of Wad Madani after the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary attacked the city at the beginning of December.
Since fighting broke out in April between the RSF and the government, the city of Wad Madani, south of Khartoum, has become a haven for thousands of displaced people during the conflict.
Fighting in Sudan came after months of escalating tensions between the commander of Sudan’s military, Gen. Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, and the head of the RSF, Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo.
